Drumroll please...AutoCAD 2014 has arrived!
Lynn Allen's Blog: Do you get as excited as I do when a new release of AutoCAD comes out? Or are you wondering what else they could possibly add to the program? Well there have been quite a few great features added into AutoCAD 2014. Everything from huge enhancements to Geographic Locations to the cool new interactive Design Feed which will make it easier for you to collaborate with others on your drawings.

I saw that 2014 was available the other day when downloading 2013 for my mac, unfortunately 2014 autodesk wont be available for a while. But on the topic of auto cad does anyone know how to turn text into polylines in 2013? every answer ive found says to use the express tools from 2010 and text explode but those options dont exist in 2013
This sounds great! Does it come with a command that will allow me to automatically pass AutoCAD.
I like the enhanced design feed, I wonder how we might use this feature to our advantage as drawings tend to change hands during during the technical design process as well as after when making install drawings. I'm also a big fan of the update to the block attribute feature as I've occasionally had to fight to get the window prompt to open. Regardless, I'm not sure that I'm quite ready to upgrade another version just yet....but we'll see--maybe after the first service update is released to fix the bugs.
Honestly, I kind of wish that auto cad would just chill out for a while and wait to come out with a new version for a few years. I have now worked on three versions of auto cad and the adjustments are pretty annoying since they slow me down for a while. I am sure the new features are useful but I think personally I will just stick with 13 for as long as possible to keep things simple. Also I wish new versions would have a *New icon next to the new features or something along those lines so we would be immediately aware of them and not forget after the first time using it.
Also I think it is rather funny how cars and video games and computer programs always come out a year in advance, that is some what false advertising.
I'm excited to get autoCAD 2014 on my machine. The only feature in the article I think will be particularly relevant to me is that block placement will call the dialogue box, but I'm excited to see what other features are available!
I agree with April. Come on AutoCad...Are you really making that many advancements that you need to change the program once a year? That's a LITTLE much. I think that at this point, they are doing it for the money and that they should wait to publish a new one until there is something significantly different or improved. Or...let us download JUST the new updates? Thats a thought...
Can it have mind recognition? The kind where I want something to happen and it will? I think we'd like that.
Just as I get 2013 working on my computer, 2014 comes out! Although i was talking to Sean the other day and he told me about a command, about turning text into poly lines that is only on the older versions of AutoCAD. Hopefully this version will not do the same kind of thing. I dont know of Vectorworks getting rid of commands as the versions come out, but I know the shortcuts and displays can be pretty different and ever evolving.
Auto CAD is a great tool and I can understand why Auto Desk makes a new version each year, but I don't know if I want to upgrade. Each time the new year rolls around there are a hand full of small updates for the average user things like the Arc direction switching, and a bunch of new features that are only ever going to be used by the most advanced users. These advanced tools make AutoCAD harder to use for the average joe by busying the interface as well as making the software harder to run on basic computer systems. So as someone just learning AutoCAD what I need is a simple set of tools that are easy to understand and use, not a giant set of tools that are very complex. Once I get better at using AutoCAD it may be worth upgrading every year, but for now I'm sticking with 2013.
The updates talked about in this article really seem more like a routine update than a new program version. I know that you pay less to upgrade from one version to the next but its still a lot of money to pay when you're only getting a few new commands to play with. The software's expense as a whole can be justified as its an immensely complex program but they should really rethink their upgrading policy, even though i know they never will because they probably make huge amounts of money.
On one hand it is super cool that software is improving so fast as to come out with new versions every year, on the other it is super frustrating. I remember a version of Photoshop that I was essentially fluent in, and with the new on I can accomplish the same things but there are a whole bunch of things I have no idea how to use. If I only used one program it wouldn't be a problem but there are a bunch and I can only keep up with so much information. I feel like it is worth either keeping one version and completely mastering it before trying to catch up to the current version or spending a lot of time mastering each version of each program as it comes out. But it seems like it would be silly to upgrade software every time when you don't use the new things. The only thing it guarantees you is that your computer can read the new format. I think its probably one of these reasons that we turn CAD assignments into the 2007 format before we turn it in, because one of our professors sees no reason to update. I will keep the 2013 CAD on my computer until I really get all its features then I will upgrade to whatever version is their new one at the time.
