William Shatner on a mission with one-man show
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: He might as well have said, "Ahead warp factor one, Mister Sulu," so familiar was the voice at the other end of the line. Instead, it was, "Hello, this is Bill Shatner," a friendly greeting from "Star Trek's" once and always Captain James T. Kirk.

Say what you will about William Shatner's acting abilities, he's had a long and illustrious career; partially, I believe, because he has never taken himself too seriously.
You can see these aspects in this interview and in this article. Shatner is pushing 80 years old and he's not only still performing but he's still got that sense of humor that has allowed him to reinvent his career when it needed reinventing.
Whether we're actors or not, that's a lesson we can all benefit from.
I agree with Jake that he has had a majority of his success due to the fact that he does not take himself too seriously. I really think that he is a bit of a hack but the man is like a cockroach he just keeps popping up on the TV. For a man his age the fact that he has managed to work consistently for decades after his prime is amazing. He also made the transition to character actor with some savvy which was cool to see. I also will say I love the fact that he has managed to differentiate himself from his defining character Captain Kirk and yet still has not alienated his fan base.
I really like him, he may be playing himself most of the time, but I disagree with the above comments although not taking himself seriously definitely helped with his career, I think he is quite a good actor. He did start out on Broadway he didn't do tv first. He had a pretty good career even before he was famous. Also all his roles that Ive seen are so believable. Even in ridiculous roles he never seems like he is an actor playing a part I always just see the character.
