I guess we should have seen this coming. I mean, they do run this show 24 hours a day around Christmas time. That being said, I would love to see this show. I watched this promo and was hooked. It provided a refreshing and new way to look at something we have been simply glancing at for years. The movie on TV simply became background noice throughout the holidays and this makes the audience look at it in a new and strange way. While watching, all I could think about was the slight nod to olden day musicals like Annie. The overall tone and dance styles reminded me of the musicals from when Broadway was known was the Great White Way, especially the "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out" number. That number contrasted with the beautiful ballad the mother sings to Ralphie makes for a beautiful new way to view this timeless classic.
Yes - this show was expected.
Yes - this show has some beautiful music.
Yes - this show will get audiences to come see it.
Is it worth it?
I am questioning whether or not this show is going to be any better or any worse than "Elf: The Musical"...
I understand that people are interested in seeing their favorite Christmas movies turned into musicals, but, COME ON....Really? Do we need to turn every movie in existence into a "New Broadway Musical"? Its clear that this is the direction that Broadway is headed...I just wish there would be something groundbreaking that happens that gets Broadway to see that there are amazing writers out there with original works. It should not be all about avoiding losses with a show... Produce something drastic. Produce something innovative. Produce something original and I will see that in a heartbeat.
So I know I did this last week, but once again...
REALLY? Really, theater world? Have we stooped so low that our idea of a good Christmas musical is make a terrible stage version of ELF and a musical of a christmas story? I mean really? The Lyrics are "It's the story of Buddy the elf" theres not even any musical creativity in that. And as for a Christmas story so many of the songs highlighted are sung by small children it's almost annoying. Kids singing songs is fine, but kids singing almost every song? I'm not saying that they are not talent kids, but if I'm going to pay a ton of money to see a show then at least throw a good deal of mature voices in the mix.
