Shakespeare's Globe Sets 2014 Opening Date for Indoor Theater

NYTimes.com: Leaders of the open-air Shakespeare’s Globe theater in London said on Tuesday that its new indoor theater space will open in January 2014 and be named for Sam Wanamaker, the American actor and director who led the decades-long effort to rebuild the Globe on the south bank of the Thames.

I love stories like this one because I am a strong believer that the world can never have enough theater spaces. I really appreciate how well the arts are funded in England, especially London. It is great that the theater has already raised over 6 million pounds and it does not open for another two years. The last time I went to London my parents took me to see a few shows, and I was blown away by the spaces and creativity onstage. The Woman in Black was particularly captivating and I am so glad that such creativity continues to grow and develop with new venues.

One of my favorite theatre-things is when shows are set in the original places/ways. This idea of building Shakespeare's original theatre, complete with candles and two tiers of seating is really cool. I think this project shows how the arts are funded in England, which is great. I'm also impressed how an outdoor theatre is planning on putting their shows inside a theatre as historically based as this one.

Being at the globe theatre was one of the coolest experiences of my life. I loved to walk in and feel like I could what shakespeare in his own time and worry about all the extra things we add on now. I could solely listen to the words and how they were meant to be spoken. I think it is extremely cool that they are making another theatre that would have held performance during the time period however, I do not think it will hold the same meaning as the globe theatre. Other artist at the time period did not have the same poetic language as shakespeare and as a consequence the theatre experience will be not as good. I think this will end up being much more a tourist attraction than an experience.
