Bloomberg.com: "“Esther” -- Hugo Weisgall’s modernist ode to the Biblical heroine -- opened the New York City Opera’s fall season at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center."

You would think that if "Esther" didn't do well back in '93 that a theater company would go in with a little caution and take steps to ensure its success now. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be the case here. I find that a bit sad because Esther's story has such potential and to see it muddied up with cheap looking costumes and an underwhelming set. It seems as though the actors gave it their best, and their efforts were duly noted in the review. It seems as though "Esther" doesn't have too much more run time, but I wish the City Opera well in their future endeavors.

The reopening of a theater does seem like a time to stick to a more tried and true offering of shows. The selection of Don Giovanni is a little more in keeping with what i would consider a wise production choice. The set choices in Giovanni sound purposeful, effective, and engaging. It's disconcerting to see two productions of such different calibers show up on the same stage.
