How the festival made Edinburgh international

Sunday Herald: "It is impossible today to imagine Edinburgh without a festival, though as they negotiate the clamouring August crowds there are some among the capital's harrassed commuters who will find it pleasing to try. They will fail, however, because Edinburgh could no more lose its festival than Egypt could lose the Pyramids. Like a graft of skin, it has become part of the place's flesh."
