Bloomberg Announces Plan to Shore Up Arts in Schools

New York Times: "Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced yesterday that the city’s Department of Education will require all schools to maintain arts programs, and that principals will be rated in their annual reviews on how well they run those programs."

I'm really glad to hear of some support for arts education, particularly in a time when "no child left behind" and standardized testing is causing elective programs to be cut in favor of fancy (thought not necessarily good) academic programs throughout America's public schools.

that's great, because at our school we only have one year requirement for arts and that's definitely not enough, so it's great to see that the arts are being recognized.

As others have said, it's wonderful that government is taking action with the arts education and not messing around. On a smaller scale, my school claims to support the arts greatly; however, they are also paying our teachers substantially less than others and giving us practically no money for our productions...plus, not enough to hardly fix the equipment we have that's broken. As a result, our teachers come and go, literally, every year. It's good to see that they are actually donating time and funding for a drama school that is tought by people who know what they're doing; not just saying, "oh we have to cover our asses and make it look like we are supporting arts, so lets throw a few dollars into something sloppy."
