SAG-AFTRA Draws Hundreds to Warner Bros. Strike Picket

Variety: SAG-AFTRA drew several hundred supporters to picket Warner Bros. in Burbank, California, for Thursday, the second demonstration since the performers union went on strike against video game companies on Oct. 21.

The union drew more than 100 supporters on Oct. 24 at Electronic Arts in Playa del Rey, California, to back the strike. SAG-AFTRA launched the strike by voice actors against EA, Warner Bros., and nine other video game makers after negotiations cratered over the key issues of secondary compensation (residuals) and transparency for voice actors — meaning that the union wants companies to stop being able to hire without identifying the game.

The problem with the way Union and INdustry battles are always reported in the news is that there is never enough hard information on which to base an actual opinion. I have very vivid memories of the last time BART went on strike for a week or two, absolutely crippling the amazing amount of commuters, including me, who used the train to get across the San Francisco Bay. Talks between union leaders and companies are always confidential, and details are never released to the press, so what are the newspapers supposed to publish except for the inevitably highly charged statements made daily to the press. At this point, these battles always devolve into a dirty PR war that leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes me end up not wanting to support either of the parties, regardless of their supposed injustices. I have a certain wariness of unions in general for this reason, simply for the lack of transparency in their actions which sometimes make them look like a giant mob. Perhaps the public would be better served if we could see and read these contracts, or otherwise figure out why hell it is we care.
