A big round of applause is in order for those fortunate enough to be recognized by USITT for the 2017 Distinguished Achievement Winners! Entertainment is a field notorious for producing some incredibly smart, incredibly creative, incredibly hard-working people. These honorees are each unique in their drive and vision, and deserve to be lauded as such.
All that being said, I think it's time for a change of key. Too long have we, as a society, venerated those that manage to make something out of nothing, or progress their various fields. What about honoring those that do little, if anything, to even make their presences known at work? How about we recognize the Ivy-League finance major with a small apartment in Cincinnati, who's managed to squander almost every penny of his $200,000 education? What about the Divinity PhD, who's spent the last 7 years selling "magic crystals" to gullible tourists out of the back of his '96 Ford Taurus? What do we do for those fine young gents? How can we pat them on the back to let them know that their contributions to society have not been completely overlooked, that they are somehow notable to be worth a nod of their own? It takes skill and great determination to waste potential like that, I'm sure. Let's recognize that.
