So Far Away, So Close: Dispatches From Iranian Theatre Artists

AMERICAN THEATRE: “I’ve been writing toward this moment for a long time,” Iranian American playwright Sanaz Toossi told me over email over the summer, as hostilities between the U.S. and Iran ramped up again after a tenuous ceasefire. But she doesn’t just mean the current war, which began in February and shows no signs of a conclusion. “What is happening to our people right now,” she said, “has been happening for the last 47 years. It may shift in and out of the news cycle, but the brutality inflicted on Iranians at the hands of the Islamic Republic has been an unshakeable, constant reality.”
