Interview: Danny Becker of RAGTIME at Rubicon Theatre Company

BroadwayWorld: You wouldn't know it from talking to him but actor Danny Becker, who was born in Great Britain and is making his American principal debut in the Rubic0n Theatre Company's production of Ragtime has a lot more in common with his character, the Latvian Jew Tateh, than you might expect.

It is really beautiful to see how Danny Becker resonates with his character Tateh. Through their similar stories and how he learns from this character and the culture the character carries. When an actor gets to experience that type of similarity and companionship with a character a really special chemical reaction comes out of it and the acting really evolves into something phenomenal. A big part of theatre’s core I think is the culture we celebrate and the stories we tell through this culture. Plays and musicals alike are set all over the world and outside of it exploring history and the future. While also incorporating various cultures and traditions that audiences do not commonly know about. There is always activism and awareness being raised in theatre. Actors learn something new with every role they play, there is so much work that goes into playing a character other than memorizing lines. Research and analysis is such an important part of the process and can make the biggest difference in a performance.
