Independently connected: Fefu and Her Friends meet virtually

Performing Arts Feature | Chicago Reader: Fefu and Her Friends, written and directed in 1977 by Cuban American playwright Maria Irene Fornés, is set over the course of one day at Fefu’s New England home, where she has gathered seven of her female friends in order to make preparations for an upcoming arts education fundraiser they are hosting.

It is interesting to see how a particular play may work better in a zoom format than others. With this play in particular, the audience typically travels from scene-to-scene, so the actors being in different locations works in tandem with this concept and is essentially a digital equivalent. It makes me wonder what other shows have found connections with the zoom format, if any. It is upsetting to see somebody with a big vision of bringing this show to Chicago be met with the pandemic and have to reconsider. Despite our best efforts, with current technology I do not think virtual theater will ever be anywhere near an in-person experience, no matter how much we reassure ourselves. I can empathize with how frustrating that must be to have a vision that is impossible to be met. Despite this, I am glad the director has found a supportive cast that is more than willing to work with the zoom medium.
