City Theatre debuts first filmed stage production with "Claws Out: A Holiday Drag Musical"

Theater | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: The holidays are all about peace and togetherness, showing family and friends how much you appreciate them by exchanging tidings of good will and, of course, gifts. But City Theatre will give audiences a different kind of gift this December when it debuts Claws Out, an original drag holiday musical starring Shua Potter and Monteze Freeland as women fighting for the title of Mrs. Claus.

Okay, well first of all, this sounds like so much fun and I really want to go and see this. I’ve never seen a drag musical but it sounds like it would be an amazing time, and I will definitely look into this when I get back home. On the top of a filmed stage production, I think this is brilliant. Although, some may not consider it live anymore because it’s being filmed technically but I think it’s a great solution to this pandemic hindering live performances. I personally feel like yes it is a compromise but it’s a compromise that a lot and most theatres had to take with their productions this season,, if they still chose to produce given the circumstances. I think especially with all the technological advances we have and the fact that we are basically being forced to have all our communication be virtual, might as well take advantage of this new medium and find a way to use it at its full potential while still remaining creative.

its very cool to see that the local theatres have developed pieces of theatre for the holiday season. Although it is a prerecorded film style movie, I this it is great of them and much better than doing nothing or waiting the virus out. I think a lot of theatres have resorted to the pre filmed methods and have chosen shows or pieces that have 1 or 2 characters. Even though it does not compare to live theatre I think it is a good way to have theatres get back on their feet. Also I think it is best to do something that is pure escapism. I don't really think people are ready for dark or dramatic theatre that will make people sad. Especially around the holidays people just want to laugh and enjoy themselves. A night of drag queens and music sound like exactly that to me
