California Based Actors, Musicians Brace For Impacts of 'Gig-Based' Bill
www.broadwayworld.com: California musicians have started a petition which as already received over 17.5K signatures urging the government to allow them an exemption under the new AB5 bill which limits which type of services are provided contractors instead of employees.

This is an incredibly complex issue which the article provided here does not fully explain. The reason this bill is being presented is so that large companies cannot hire people as contractors in an effort to avoid providing them basic standards such as breaks, minimum wage, overtime, and workers’ compensation. This bill is trying to stop workers from being taken advantage of, but many groups have reached out, as actors and musicians are doing, seeking exemption. Already, this has been granted for truck drivers whose jobs would otherwise have likely been eliminated. It seems that if there is a reasonable enough argument that the “gig-based” bill will have a significant impact on employment opportunities, exemption may be granted. Hopefully workers in the arts are able to put up a good fight as the truck drivers did, but their numbers are smaller and the absolute demand for truck drivers far outweighs artists.
