Data Extraction: Exploring the Features and Benefits of AutoCAD
AutoCAD Blog | Autodesk: Simply, data extraction is the ability to extract data from objects in your drawing or multiple drawings. Data extraction in AutoCAD enables you to streamline the process of “counting stuff” by reducing the manual counting and entering of table data. The extracted data can then be linked to a table in your drawing, or external files. AutoCAD provides a Data Extraction Wizard that controls the extraction of that data. In addition to the ability to extract drawing data, the Wizard also enables you to combine drawing data with external data such as information from an Excel spreadsheet.

Data extraction seems like a great tool. I feel like it would greatly streamline the budgeting process. I know that during the process of making technical draftings and then budgeting them in PTM was the simplified process of what technical directors do to budget a set, but in such a case as Andre’s mega wall set, that would be made up of sets of stock platform sizes in addition to a few custom flats, being able to set a budget for that stock platform, and being able to then export the amount of those stock platforms straight from the drafting would greatly streamline the budgeting process and even maybe eliminate stupid human error. Before this article, I had not seen the appeal of using blocks in Auto CAD. I had honestly seen them as a clumsy solution for construction shortcuts that could ultimately be solved by using a bunch of polylines, but after reading the article, I can see the spreadsheet and data appeal.
