Pittsburgh in the Round: Pittsburgh Musical Theater’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame brings a powerful mixture of student and professional performers to the Byham Theater, where it continues playing through February 5th.
The show – based on the Victor Hugo novel and animated Disney movie – captures the drama of Paris in the Middle Ages, with its brutality and the cruel, corrupt version of religion often seen in the 16th century.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame, in my opinion, is one of the most underrated shows. As a Disney movie it is vastly under watched. As a musical, it's life was cut unfortunately short, and as a soundtrack it's then rarely listened to - at least among those who I know. The extreme power and vocal prowess exhibited in the cast recording was absolutely unbelievable, I couldn't stop listening to the long notes held out with such emotion and such incredible ability. Beyond just being a beautiful show, the story is still relevant and still important to this day. It is a show that champions those who live by their heart and do what's right for people they care about. It's about supporting the outcasts, those looked down upon by the vocal portions of society, those shut out by authority figures. I think its wonderful to expose more and more people to this show. It's a heavy show - heavy skill and heavy subject - but if we listen to it's message and we listen to its emotion and its beauty maybe we too can stand up for the outcasts and stand up for what's right and support those who are shut out simply for the culture they have or the looks they were born with.
