Researchers Engineer World's Strongest Substance from Soybeans

interestingengineering.com: Graphene made headlines last year as the world’s strongest and most innovative substance. The one-atom-thick carbon material drew attention for everything from electromagnetism to conductive properties to its insane durability. However, high costs of graphene kept the material grounded from its true potential.

I think any advancement to be made in fields like this is a good one. Right now, so much fo the construction world relies on wood and other natural products that aren't really sustainable. Especially in the theatre, where we usually scrap most of what we've only had up for a month or so. In our realistically quite wasteful industry, materials that can be fabricated without as much environmental harm should be a focus. While it's not exactly feasible to develop and cultivate the use of this material ourselves (we don't exactly have the equipment just lying around), we should be encouraging those in other industries to continue to pursue these alternative materials. In the meantime, because products like these likely won't be available for a good amount of time, we should try as much as we can to minimize waste and our carbon footprint by looking into currently available, budget permitting, methods and materials for construction.

I'm glad this was posted here because I agree with Ali's argument in terms of wood and natural products being unsustainable. This is one of those weird, science articles that we usually stay away from as if it's the plague but these types of discoveries often have an effect on our ordinary fields and jobs that often go unnoticed. Granted, right now and often with new discoveries, these types of innovations aren't cheap when they're right off the press. It's probably going to take a little while before graphene is used as a business venture to strengthen the integrity of already existing items. But in a couple decades, when I look at the sticker on my product and see that it's made out of graphene, I'm totally going to remember that one time in college where I learned about this substance. Plus, perks of graphene, the fact that we're developing all of these environmentally friendly materials is great now that that's become a reoccurring issue in theater specifically especially since we've been needing to stop the use of MDF and lauan plywood.
