Now You Can Sketch Musical Ideas on Interactive Sheet Music

The Creators Project: As a tool, the composer’s pad of sheet music is often beyond the abilities of the layperson. Certainly it’s beyond the ability of most self-taught musicians, who maybe didn’t undertake formal notational training. Independent software developer and composer Alexei Baboulevitch is hoping to reinvent composition with modern technology in his Composer's Sketchpad app, which imagines writing sheet music as an interactive artmaking process.

This is such an amazing app! I love the way they are taking the sometimes tedious act of composing and turning it into a fun, interactive, playful activity. There is something really great about the artistic apps for the iPad. They all seem to have no boundaries or restrictions, allowing for a stress-free environment to work in. The other great thing about using an app for something like this is that there is no limit to the tools you have. If you were attempting to compose something in "real life," you would need to actually have a guitar, a piano, and a violin to see how they all sound together (or be skilled at Garage Band). But here, your tools are unlimited. You can be a guitar player at 3:15 and an oboe player at 3:20. Of course, this isn't to write off the hard work that goes into composing a piece or playing an instrument, but I think that apps like this are what make the very idea of apps great.
