'Heathers' a scrappy take on teen angst

Chicago Tribune: Kokandy Productions — one of several fairly new Chicago musical companies that mine hot young talent — likely will have a solid hit this spring with its edgy, raucous and snarky production of "Heathers: The Musical," the 2010 adaptation of Michael Lehmann's 1988 movie about a group of high school mean girls in Ohio who are so tyrannical that their slacker antithesis decides they'd all be better off dead.

Ever since I first heard the soundtrack for Heathers, I've always thought there was something there that was meant to be explored beyond it's original 2010 run with the most minimal set you could imagine. The costumes were pretty tragic, they were true to the story and the time period, but ill fitted and read as very low budget. The 2014 off broadway run sadly seemed to follow a similar pattern. At the end of the day, I feel as though the show needs a much larger budget and some small script and lyrical reworks to really succeed. There is a lot of potential for success in it, and that's definitely being recognized by producers, as I didn't expect to a see review of a current production taking place in Chicago. I would love to see a producer take the show with the intention of selling it commercially, because I feel as though the bones of the show are so blatantly commercial theatre, that just needs a few changes to switch up the more outspoken parts of the show that don't necessarily feel like they fit in.
