A Leap of Faith to Seattle
HowlRound: I often wonder about how the Latina/o Theatre Commons (LTC) will achieve its ever-evolving goals. I think that there is a natural instinct to try to set an agenda, outline the talking points, or let a group know what will be talked about before talking about it, but the LTC intentionally resists these inclinations and the results do vary. This is the approach that the LTC is taking for our next convening in Seattle, WA, with the intention of serving Latina/o theatremakers in the Pacific Northwest.

This article presented a really interesting perspective on what the kids these days are calling "meet-ups". The LTC seems like a really interesting organization, who has principles and practices that make a lot of sense. I really enjoy the idea that they do no go into a meeting with a set agenda, but instead let the participants set the tone for the conversation. That allows the artists to freely express themselves and shows a lot of respect for their input and experiences. I feel like sometimes organizations like that can be a bit aggressive, insinuating that 'this must be your experience' and 'these are the actions you must take' But truthfully, there's no right or wrong way to be a Latin@ in this profession. And there's no right or wrong way to deal with any discrimination faced. I applaud LTC for creating such an open environment for people to communicate. Because sometimes you just need to vent about your experiences without the confines of a structure or agenda.
