I love that these kinds of "home away from home" spots exist out in the real world, because even as a designer I often wonder what's going to happen when I leave the comfort of an educational facility for the disparate and diverse work spaces of New York, LA, Chicago, and the like. I have been lucky in that the places where I have studied have always offered a concrete and defined place where I am welcome and one with a community - not just a studio or a shop, but an entire building with multiple spaces for me to both work and unwind. Sometimes I worry that when I move from space to space and job to job as one does in the working world, I will lose the stability of these environments. Knowing that places like these exist for actors - who arguably have far less opportunity for permanent spacial occupation than designers - gives me hope that they exist for artists like me as well. This is the type of business that not only creates a work environment in which diverse and unique artists can belong but demands as well a place for them to feel welcome amongst each other when their work is done. Having read this article, I am excited to one day learn what those places may be for my fellow students and me.
