Riviera Theatre stagehands rally at Jam Productions headquarters, claim they were illegally fired

Bleader | Chicago Reader: At a quarter to noon today, Riviera Theatre stagehands fired by Jam Productions earlier this fall inflated a giant rat outside the Old Town offices of one of the country's last remaining big independent concert promoters. The workers hung a sign around its neck: "I was knifed by a 'Jerry Mickelson' slacker for being a union backer." The stagehands say the 40 employees that Jam CEO Jerry Mickelson fired in September were let go illegally—they claim he was retaliating because they'd signed cards to authorize a union election.

This is interesting because I have been starting to learn about unions in both Technical Management and Introduction to Business Management. In Technical Management, we discuss unions in a fairly positive manner, yet trying to remain objective, however in Introduction to Business Management, it is a discussion that does lean on other side. Also, in Introduction to Business Management, we have been talking about having people leave as employees, in terms of firings, furloughs, and more. And in the situation of the Riveria Stagehands, it is important, as it always is, to remain objective and unbiased when decided which side was right. What I personally hope happens is that there is a civil discussion between the two sides because it seems like the employees did care about the work they were doing. Additionally, these employees have a very specific set of traits that can be hard to find work for.
