First Look at the Ghost in the Shell Theatrical Play

kotaku.com: While the Hollywood Ghost in the Shell movie with Scarlett Johansson lurches forward, a new GiTS stage play recently opened in Tokyo.

It’s called Ghost in the Shell Arise: Ghost is Alive. It’s totally official, and the poster looks totally terrific

Japanese culture is fascinating to me, and a stage adaptation of Ghost in the Shell is something that I never would expect. I have seen the animated film version, which depicted a sci-fi world of androids and humans living and fighting together, and it dealt with themes of what it means to be human in a world where the line gets more blurred every day. For a series in the 90's, the themes just get more and more relevant, which American filmmakers saw, leading to a fast-tracked live-action version starring Scarlett Johansson. This is the first time I've heard of a staged adaptation of anime, and also the first I've heard of this brand of theatre being popular in Japan. The poster looks very filmic in nature, depicting the characters dramatically against a desolate backdrop. The play also seems to be using some cutting edge tech, as audiences wear 3D glasses during the show since the media design projects in 3 dimensions, which is something I've never seen used in a theatrical setting. If it works, it works, which is awesome. I hope that one day we can whitewash this one too and bring it to America, or, even better, have the Japanese production tour.
