How Donyale Werle, Tony Award-winning Scenic Designer, Uses The Rose Brand Discount Store
blog.rosebrand.com: Broadway Scenic Designer, Donyale Werle (Peter and The Starcatcher, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), uses the Rose Brand Discount Store extensively. "I usually look there first when selecting fabrics and curtains for my productions. In fact, I'll often change my design to accommodate what's currently available."

I think this is just awesome. Obviously when looking to save money there are easy ways to conceptually cut corners, and it's important to design for the show, not for the materials available. But it sounds like Ms. Werle strikes a nice balance at this. The items she finds seem to lend themselves to her aesthetic, she encourages reusing and recycling, and she probably has a nicer budget line at the end of the day. I think this is something we have begun to implement here at CMU (by reusing items from old sets), but there are more things we could be doing, like shopping at Construction Junction and Creative Reuse Pittsburgh, to help make our sets more economically and ecologically friendly.
