Emma Thompson Calls Out Hollywood Sexism in Ten Different Ways at THR Actress Roundtable

Women and Hollywood: One of the great things about this awards season is he re-emergence of Emma Thompson. We have got to say that she has been missed. We need to see her more because she is a rare, unfiltered, delight. Have you seen her singing at the Mary Poppins sing-a-long? You must.
The delightfully outspoken actress, who stars as Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers in Disney's upcoming Saving Mr. Banks, was the highlight of The Hollywood Reporter's annual Actress Roundtable, criticizing sexism in the film industry at all stages of production.

What a great round table. And yet, their discussion produced such dismaying results! It is indeed sad, as Emma Thompson notes, that actresses still aren't getting meatier roles written for them in movies. Far too often, a female actress is cast as the girl next door, the "ho", the ingenue, or the crazy woman. And that just doesn't reflect all the different kinds of women that are out there! As Octavia Spencer indicates, tv is becoming a more welcoming place for actresses to take on big edgy scripts and roles, but film is still what reaches the masses the quickest, and film really does have to change if other industries are to follow suit.
