Stage Directions: The second greatest hobby of theatre lovers everywhere kicked off today: Handicapping the Tony Awards. The nominations in 26 competitive for the Tonys were announced this morning by Jim Parsons and Kristin Chenoweth in New York City, and 30 productions were nominated in at least one category. In a bit of a surprise the musical Once, a low-spectacle movie adaptation, led all nominees with 11 nods (including one for Best Musical). Right behind it with 10 nominations was The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, including one for Best Revival of a Musical. The downtown transfer Peter and the Starcatcher (by Rick Elice) picked up the most nominations for a play, including one for Best Play. And it probably didn’t surprise anyone that Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was passed over for Best Musical nod, and was only nominated in two categories: Best Costume Design of a Musical for Eiko Ishioka and Best Scenic Design of a Musical for George Tsypin. And Shakespeare Theatre Company earned the Tony Regional Theatre Award.

Well these weren't nominations aren't some what predictable at all. The only two categories that had fans guessing who was going to win was best musical and play. Personally, I can say that I was torn between "Nice Work If You Can Get It" and "Newsies". Both are two great new fantastic new musical. However, there was never a second where I thought that "Once" would win, but it did. On the other hand, in terms of the plays, I was torn between "Clyborne Park" and "Other Desert Cities". I ended up guessing correctly, and Clyborne won! This just proves that fans never know who is going to win the Tony.
