Catcalls Punctuate Mozart Opera Debate

Backstage: "Interrupted by occasional heckles, police and culture officials on Tuesday debated an opera company's decision to cancel performances of a Mozart opera out of fear one of its scenes could provoke Islamic violence."

If another theater picks up this production, it would be a media frenzy. All the hype surrounding this one 200 year old opera is just giving the opera world some much needed press. This is a classic example of free PR. The Deutsche Oper Berlin will only benifit from this entire issue. Most opera patrons are older and they might be turned off by all the controversy, but the younger crowd will see that opera could be dangerous and risqué.
