The Hollywood diversity fix

New Pittsburgh Courier: There’s nothing new about #OscarsSoWhite. Once upon a time, Hollywood’s diversity battle stretched as far as The White House.

For the second year in a row, there are no people of color nominated for Oscars in any acting category. In protest, a social-media storm erupted, as did a Black-celebrity-endorsed boycott.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — led by Cheryl Boone Isaacs, its first African-American president — responded with plans to diversify the Oscar-bestowing organization’s membership by 2020.

Its interesting that this is on here because I just saw the other day that Marlon Brando once boycotted his best actor Oscar for the Godfather for their mistreatment of Native Americans in the movie business, in a similar way to what people are doing now, with #oscarsowhite. And he won the Oscar actually, but had a Native American man, Sachen Littlefeather accept the award for him on behalf of all Native American people. And what the Oscars did was remove the option to have someone accept the award for you.
So, this is definitely not the first time. But it appears to be the first time that we as a country and as film goers, are really getting real leverage. With the new deal promised by 2020, and the overall outrage from the public, and I'm sure what will be a decrease in viewers tonight, I think things will change. not only that but the amount of minorites and mixed race people is increasing, especially the Hispanic population, and representation will continue to be a pressing issue.
