I think the “best advice” from this article came from Second City’s creative advisor, Kelly Leonard. “We crumple up the bad review and throw it in the garbage.... But to achieve your greatest creative potential, you need to reorient your instincts and look at any object that’s in front of you not as an obstacle but as a possibility.... To improvise and innovate, you have to fail.” That’s absolutely the truth. Very commonly I find myself and many others beating themselves up over a poor decision they made or at the failure of a project. But does it really matter? Theatre is a place for artists, a place to experiment. Any scientist will tell you that every experiment will not lead to success, in fact they would probably warn you to expect failure and relish in any ounce of success. I think what Leonard said really speaks to this mentality. I’m very grateful to be in an educational environment where failure and exploration are desired and encouraged.
