Milwaukee M18 Fuel Circular Saw 2731-21 Review

PTR: The new Milwaukee M18 Fuel Circular Saw features a single 18V battery system that runs a 7-1/4″ blade. This entry into the full size cordless circular saw arena made waves because of the fact that it only uses that one M18 RedLithium battery. Questions were certainly raised as to whether it would be able to perform with the LXT 18V X2 dual battery system from Makita or the 36V platform from Hilti. On paper, it specs out well with a no load speed of 5,000 RPM. While the kit includes 4.0 XC Redlithium batteries, the introduction of the 5.0 amp hour RedLithium batteries can only help.

Milwaukee is definitely a company to keep your eye on. I feel like every week there has been a review on the News Page about a new Milwaukee tool, and every new tool is better than most in the competition.

In our own shop, hands down one of my favorite tools is the Milwaukee 6-1/2" Circular saw. I was blown away by it's long battery life last year when I took it over to Studio 201 to build a show on two separate occasions. Both times it was the rockstar tool in my arsenal. It's small and feisty and packs a punch. The start and stop time of the blade is almost instant and with proper pressure, it will cut through most any material. I was only disappointed on a few occasions in which I had to flip the piece I was working on over because the saw was just barely not wide enough to cut all the way through. Which is why I was so excited to hear that the new 7-1/4" saw lives up to what I have come to expect from Milwaukee tools. A huge plus is the single battery, as the circ saw is not a tool you want to be too heavy to lift, especially if you are planning to make 125 cuts on a single battery charge.

Well job all around Milwaukee!

A full size circular saw with an 18v battery is almost a little bit hard to believe. Some of the small battery circ saws barely perform well, so it’s amazing that Milwaukee has managed to make one that’s full sized.

I’m interested in the battery run time for this tool. The article mentions that it will make 100 cross cuts of a pressure treated 2x8, but I want to know how many LF of ¾” plywood it will cut before performance becomes unacceptable.

What would make this tool better? An accessory track that would turn it into a track saw. It would be the ultimate on-site circ saw for a carpenter.

I wish Hilti made this tool. If they did, maybe we would actually buy one.
