Cuba to stage 'Rent' - first Broadway musical in more than 50 years

Reuters: Cuba will stage its first Broadway musical in more than 50 years when "Rent" starts a three-month run on Dec. 24, producers said on Monday.

The Nederlander entertainment group finally succeeded after trying for several years to produce a Broadway musical in Cuba, a spokesman for Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment said.

U.S.-produced musicals were disallowed in Cuba after the 1959 revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power.

This is pretty big news!
On the one hand I am extremely pleased to see that Cuban-American relations are getting better, even if it is just a Broadway musical. Both the United States and Cuba are countries with such rich cultural traditions that manifest themselves in a multitude of entertainment mediums. It gives me hope that one day they will fix relations to the point where an open channel of communication and create content together.

On the other hand, I kind of wish they were doing anything but Rent. If musicals were banned from Cuba for their American values, I am not sure Rent should be the first one performed. Yes, it isn't uniquely an American story, but it is somewhat a priding achievement that America has flaunted. I believe a more international musical might be more successful, something like the King and I or Les Miserables, though I guess the revolutionary tones might not go over so well either.

I wonder if more people would have commented on this article if it had a picture?
