Showbiz, Music Industry Jobs Drop 19% in Two Years

Variety: The U.S. economy has seen a steady erosion of jobs in the motion picture and sound industries, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Preliminary statistics from the BLS show that employment in those two industries has dropped to 298,000 in August — marking the first time in the past decade that the number has dropped below 300,000, and representing an 8% decline from 324,600 jobs in August 2013, and a 19% slide from 366,300 jobs in August 2012.

That seems like a large number overall but in the grand scheme of things it's a drop in the bucket. It makes you really think about the world that we are getting ready to enter into. It's scary to think that there are less that 300,000 jobs out there right now for us to go after and then there's a whole new class of students graduating next year and the year after all going after those same jobs. Additionally we are competing with people who have been doing these things for years. And really, other than the opportunity to hire someone who will probably work for cheaper than others, why would you hire someone fresh out of school when there are others who have experience already? It's a frightening time for people in the arts to be graduating and entering the real world. Hopefully the things we've learned here will be of benefit for when we graduate. We'll see.

Ok, this is sad to see so many people getting laid off, but this what the entertainment business is like. You win some and you lose some. I've heard so much about how hard it is the get a job in entertainment and yes it's true because everyone one wants to do it, but there are so many advancements happening that people need to find where to look. I mean projection mapping is becoming a very poplar go to for people in the theatre industry, I bet if someone brought this up to the music produces the job applications would increase exponentially. So yes it's sad to see a decrease in a industry, but you just gotta look hard enough and know who to talk to because there's always something out there for everyone.
