Film and Television Production Heats Up in Chicago

www.backstage.com: It’s a little-known fact that Chicago was once America’s film-production capital, until the better weather and more tolerant attitudes toward screaming at one’s subordinates caused film execs to migrate en masse to Hollywood in the early 20th century.

It is so nice to hear about somewhere besides Hollywood being successful in the Tv and film industry. It's such a sadly true cliche that if you want to work in theatre you should go to New York, and if you want to work in film you should go to Hollywood. But I live near Hollywood and it is definitely not one of my favorite places to be; there are way too many people who want to "see" Hollywood - tourists who spend all their money on fake Oscars and pictures with fake movie characters prowling the streets. The culture seems shallow and overdone, and I would be happy to see it even out and spread its wings across the country. Good for Chicago for benefitting from Hollywood's leftovers. I hope they begin to thrive from this industry but don't suffer too much the ills of Hollywood.

It's always good to see different cities on the rise in the area of entertainment. Professionals, particularly young professionals, shouldn't feel as though they HAVE to live in one particular place in order to pursue a successful career. There's so much more out there than only New York and Los Angeles, and it's nice when that so much more gets some recognition. People should be able to find a place they love, a place that works for them. There is no way that only two cities cover the desires of every entertainment professional out there. And even better than that, we as young people have the chance to see and go and do in many of these places. We should live in Pittsburgh, live in New York, LA, Chicago, Boston, DC, Dallas, Timbuktoo, and everywhere else. And not be worried about finding work when we are there.
