Wranglers Supervise Underage Actors on Broadway

WSJ.com: "The first day of rehearsal for 'Finian's Rainbow,' Alissa Zulvergold brought packets of the multicolored candy Skittles to the three children in the cast. Since then, Ms. Zulvergold, the hit Broadway revival's kid wrangler—she keeps the little performers in line, on their toes and out of everyone else's hair—has diligently worked the rainbow connection. She festooned the children's scripts with rainbow stickers, put bright-hued soaps and markers in their dressing room, and bought them rainbow-colored slinkies and tote bags as opening-night gifts. 'I want them to know that they may be the smallest ones there,' said Ms. Zulvergold, 26, 'but they're just as important as anyone else in the production. They're part of the rainbow.'"

I think it would be really difficult to know where the lines are as a child wrangler. You're with the kids all the time but are not a tutor or a parent. The theatre hires you to take care of the child's interests but what is the job really? I think it would take a special kind of personality and countenance to deal with that many child actors at once. I really liked reading about who these people are and what they do. They all seem to have a lot to add and also seem to really like and care about what they do.

I saw Ragtime in New York this weekend and was pleased by the 3 child actors they had. Two were around the age of 10 and were in multiple scenes dancing and singing. The third was a boy of about 4 who shows up for the finale and is held. He doesn't even bow. His only business was to run onstage and give his 'mother' a hug but it was one of the best moments in the show. I do admit that I left wondering what he had been doing for the last 2 hours and with whom.
