The Moscow Times: "If you do what I do — write about Russian theater — there is no getting away from him. He is everywhere, he haunts your every move, your every thought, your every dream and nightmare. He is Anton Chekhov."
First off, this columnist is absolutely a delight to read. His wit and commentary on everything in the piece is wonderful, and really made me curious about the new adaptation of The Seagull. What the director did is astounding and quite brave in my book. To take something so longstanding and completely turn it on its head takes a lot of nerve, and I certainly respect that and wish I could have seen this production. When theatre people are willing to risk their reputations, and the expectations of an entire country dedicated to the purity of a playwright's work, you know we're still in business.
