How ‘critical karaoke’ is helping researchers to explore the music of Taylor Swift
theconversation.com: In honour of Taylor Swift’s three concerts at Liverpool’s Anfield stadium this summer, the University of Liverpool hosted Tay Day (Liverpool’s Version), an academic conference on Taylor Swift and her music on June 12.
Each presentation explored Swift from a different critical perspective. While it was an academic event, there were fun pop aspects such as friendship bracelets, attendees in sparkles – and even a round of “critical karaoke”.

I love this idea of “critical karaoke,” participants tell their story in the “span of the time it takes to listen to the song they choose– with the song playing behind them.” It was cool to hear about the ways that participants used this medium to tell their stories. I especially loved hearing how timing could be used to make an insight about a specific lyric in a song. It’s hard to grasp in an article, but I’m sure there is something special about hearing this in person (and with a live band!).
I listened to a lot of Taylor Swift when I was younger, as it was one of the few artists that most of my friends knew. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve definitely strayed from her music and fandom. It has gotten a lot more intense. I am glad that so many people find comfort and connection in her lyrics and music. It is clear through this article and through the explanations of their ‘critical karaoke’ that Taylor Swift’s music creates an amazing community.
