Review Roundup: MRS. DOUBTFIRE Opens on Broadway

www.broadwayworld.com: Daniel Hillard, a struggling, out-of-work actor, will do anything for his kids. After losing custody in a messy divorce, he creates the kindly alter ego of Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire in a desperate attempt to stay in their lives. As his new character takes on a life of its own, Mrs. Doubtfire teaches Daniel more than he bargained for about how to be a father. A hysterical and heartfelt story about holding onto your loved ones against all odds, Mrs. Doubtfire is the musical comedy we need right now - one that proves we're better together.

I loved watching Mrs. Doubtfire on VHS as a kid. It was one of my favorite movies growing up, mainly just due to Robin Williams’ brilliance. However, I know that there has been some debate about using men crossdressing as a punchline and how that contributes to transphobia with works like Mrs. Doubtfire and Tootsie. It certainly is a difficult line to navigate. While there likely wasn’t any intentional harm behind either of these two works, we need to acknowledge the impact they have had on the trans community and this dangerous notion that trans women are just men in wigs and dresses. Ignoring the complexities surrounding a work like this and how its aged into a more inclusive society, it sounds like the music isn’t even that good. The variety comment that says “If the score has a unifying principle, it's duly resisting catchiness or memorability” is rather gutting.
