Insecure: For the First Time, Every Single Costume Was Designed by a Black Woman

Vanity Fair: On Sunday night’s episode of Insecure, every detail of every costume was designed by a Black woman—from clothing to accessories to shoes. It’s a fashion first for the series, intentionally accomplished by longtime costume designer Shiona Turini and executive producer and writer Amy Aniobi, who also directed the episode. It goes hand in hand not only with the overarching theme of the show—a celebration of and devotion to Black womanhood—but also with the theme of the seventh episode itself, which features best friends Issa, Molly, Kelly, and Tiffany bonding over the course of a day that morphs into a cozy night sewn with secrets.

I think today has been a great day cause I have ready about two impactful moves in the direction of a more diverse and inclusive industry that I strive to be a part of in the future. First that Broadway will mount "Trouble in Mind", a huge platform. Second, that an Emmy - winning show showed an episode where all costumes were designed by a black woman. I know that in the bigger picture, these two actions do not make up for all the work that needs to be done to make this industry more equitable and inclusive, But in a situation where nothing was being done some time ago, two moves seem like a leap.
I think that these costumes being designed by a black woman with no other influence but her own vision really made this episode so so wonderful. I did not know about this when I watched the episode but after reading this, there are moments which I can look back upon the episode and see for myself the impact of this decision.
