Appreciation: Atlanta theater community shares Stephen Sondheim inspiration

ARTS ATL: Few Atlanta theater artists knew Stephen Sondheim personally. Yet the loss felt personal for countless Atlanta actors, directors and other theater professionals, as is apparent in social media posts and buzz that has spread following the death of the acclaimed songwriter and master of musical theater at age 91 last Friday.

I personally don’t know much about playwrights and composers (interesting coming from a theater major, don’t judge me I’m tech) but I have heard a bit about Sondheim from my sister, friends, and I’ve seen two productions of Sondheim’s shows (Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods) I would have helped produce Assassins at CMU but…. COVID. I can’t say that I have connected with Sondheim’s work or really understand any of it (I have liked the songs that I have heard and enjoyed watching Into the Woods @ CMU a few years ago) but there is respect for anyone that had a profound effect on the musical theater community. This article also reminds me that I want to go see some productions at the Alliance Theater in Atlanta. I grew up 40 minutes outside of the city but wasn’t into theater when I lived in Georgia. Maybe one day I will go watch a production of Sondheim’s work when I visit Atlanta next.
