I watched Dreamgirls last night for the first time! It is amazing. I agree completely with all the praise showered to it in this article– the music is wonderful, it's humorous, and the character arcs are also great. I also loved seeing it and recognizing all the allusions to historical events and figures– the race riots in the 1960s, Michael Jackson and the jackson five, the Vietnam war, etc.
It was sweet to hear how excited the actresses were to play the Dreamgirls. The story definitely resonates with a lot of people.
I read a review of Pittsburgh Musical Theatre’s rendition, and it sounded great! It noted that the set designer “very nearly succeeds” in stretching the budget to fit the movie’s grand sets. The actors were amazing, and from a photo, the costumes were amazing. I hope more theatres put on Dreamgirls! I’d love to see the sets, costumes, and hear the amazing songs in person one day.
