Interview: Moana's Rachel House on Kiwi Films

The Mary Sue: Moana didn’t walk away with the Best Animated Feature award at Sunday’s Oscar celebration but star Auli’i Cravalho won the night with a stunning rendition of “How Far I’ll Go” despite being whacked in the face mid-performance. She is one example of the many amazing people who took part in this inspiring story of a young Māori princess who embarks on a dangerous journey in order to save her people.

I was sad to see that Moana did not win an Academy Award, but was really impressed with the performance. What surprises me the most about this animated movie in general is how much talk their is about the cast and the characters they play. I think that normally in other animated films their is not as much as an emphasis on each actor and their character because they are doing voice overs in a studio as opposed to acting with a cast in front of a camera. I really appreciate how Moana casted the movie taking in the characters backgrounds and wanted to bring new cultures to the film. Reading the interview is was nice to see how glad the actress was and how she really appreciates the opportunity to bring her culture to the movie. I also love to see that she is playing many different roles in the industry, from theater and to directing films.
