adjaye & DS+R propose designs for london's illuminated river

www.designboom.com: proposals by six international teams — including adjaye associates, AL_A, and diller scofidio + renfro — have been unveiled for the ‘illuminated river’ design competition, a program conceived to light central london’s bridges along the river thames. each group has created a concept scheme for the lighting of four individual bridges — chelsea, london, waterloo and westminster — as well as an overarching masterplan for the main road, rail and pedestrian bridges between albert and tower.

The technique is simple yet elegant and it must be beautiful upon completion. The video presentation itself was definitely investor worthy. I found the idea of the water rising/lowering controlling the lights interesting but I didn't realise the extreme fluctuation of the river until the end of the presentation video and then the emphasis on the rising and lowering of tides made much more sense. It will definitely be a great tourist trap with all of the sappy over romanticized concepts of the human life span.

I really like that there is a competition like this. The idea that London wants to illuminate the river and bridges and are opening it up to companies to create and idea is really great. I think that the more countries get their people proposing ways to redesign their homes is a good way to make a city the way people want it made. Each group is very unique in their idea but they all rotate around the idea of bringing the message of what London is about to a singular area for everyone to see. I wish I could go there when the winner is announced and their work is produced because it is going to beautiful either way. I always have liked the idea of using light around water and the reflection in the water does to the overall picture and how different the view is when you move even just a step in a different direction because the current of the river is always moving. Although I have to say that the music used was very creepy and it almost made me want to not finish the clip. They should have chosen a more upbeat and encouraging song.

I’m travelling to London for spring break this year so I will be interested to see the River Thames in person and see what the video talks about. The project itself is fascinating. I can’t think of any project in the world that works the way that this is proposing. While watching the video, I was wondering where else you implement something to this degree. The convergence of the three rivers in downtown Pittsburgh would be a place worth exploring. What this project does well is that it is able to think underneath as opposed to above ground. We rarely think in this fashion which is fine considering everything we do for the most part is above ground. However, as the video discusses, there are forces that move this world forward and forces that got us to where we are today, so why not try and recognize that with this type of installation?

I know very little about lights and now they work, but I can certainly appreciate a good design. It is beautiful to me thaT artists are taking to the streets to spread creativity and color. Bridges are amazing peices are architecture, and I'm fascinated by how they are built and sustains. I feel like the lights really highlight that and bring beauty to a busy city. The projection of writting on one of the bridges is my favorite. I'd love to go for a late night walk, lights surrounding me, and read a little. However, I was a little confused how travelers in the opposite direction would benefit.
