This article stood out to me on two main levels. Firstly, as a freshman DP, we just finished our presentations about local cultural sectors, districts, and theaters around Pittsburgh. Through my own research and the research of my fellow classmates, I now know a lot more about Pittsburgh’s theaters and respective performances that they are putting on; I’m recognizing certain names such as the Bricolage, Quantum Theater, CLO, etc. Within this article, they are laid out extremely well. There are many reasons why we should pay attention to simply articles. Secondly, this article is important because it lets us know what’s going on in the world of Pittsburgh theaters. All of us should be getting out there and experiencing the professional theater world outside of CMU to see why we’re studying drama here for. There are also potential connections, internship, and employment opportunities awaiting us if we get in touch with these theaters. In addition, seeing performances as a student are easier than ever given the reduced ticket prices. Go out and see these shows!!!!
As I read this article, there were one or two companies I had never heard of before. But, there is another reason why this article is so exciting. I don’t know much about this what seems like newer publication, but what was most exciting was the theatres it did not mention. Pittsburgh Public Theatre was not mentioned and only one show by the CLO was quickly listed. This may seem like a small detail, but is a huge step for the collective of the Pittsburgh theatre scene. Pittsburgh is growing and developing in terms of how a “scene” functions. There are the popular, well-attended shows at the CLO Cabaret, the Broadway series, and ballet. But we now have some other ranks of groups. We have the well-known more “Off-Broadway”-like groups such as Quantum, Bricolage, and PICT. But perhaps the newest, fleshed-out category is the groups such as off the WALL, Cup-A-Jo, and Kinetic which are your smaller “Off-Off Broadway”-like groups.
I never though I'd say it, but I've really missed Pittsburgh. In my summer of absence, I realized what a rare gem this city is, a cultural gem with a sporting legacy to be proud of, and enough perogies to feed the Icelandic army for a week. Having stated my appreciation for this city, I'd like to get right to to actually relevant part of this comment, where I express my excitement for the amount and quality of upcoming shows, and my continued veneration for the venues that produce these spectacles. Here are some highlights.
Our own Andrew Smith will be at Quantum Theater (still in Peribanez afterglow) with a production of "The River." Cup-a-Jo Productions is doing "Titus Andronicus" outside, starting in late September, which should be interesting towards the end of the run. Meanwhile, Bricolage is doing an immersive, interactive theater piece called "The Imaginarium," which I'm very interested in. All the productions in this article promise to be very good (it's Pittsburgh, after all), but this list has one flaw; it ignores the CMU productions of similar caliber.
