Promoting Safe Rigging in the Entertainment Industry
blog.cmworks.com: On Friday, April 24th we celebrated #RigSafe day, an initiative started by the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) to promote safe rigging in the entertainment industry. USITT asked companies to join the initiative by sharing rigging safety tips on social media under the hashtag #rigsafe.

These are all, simply put, just really good and (mostly) common sense tips that anyone doing any type of rigging should know. A few of these tips though are less immediately obvious than they might seem. In an industry where we work for weeks to put up a show that might come down in days, maintenance is often forgotten. However, it is very important to know that the equipment you’re working with is properly maintained and inspected when its failure is potentially lethal. Unplugging things before you maintain them is also a really good idea, and can be pretty much universally true. But lastly, the tip that caught my eye is to always have a rescue plan. It occurred to me as I read the tip that this step should probably be the thing that should determine whether we do something or not. It might be wise to ask the question, ‘If something goes wrong, can I still get out of this ok?’ should be on the list of questions to ask before inserting yourself into a dangerous situation. Answering the question should be able to either let you know that you shouldn’t be doing it, or tell you how to respond to an emergency if you needed to.
