Sherlock spoof: ‘Mask of Moriarty’ a new take on an old detective

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Pittsburgh audiences have seen David Whalen play both of the title characters in "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" and Mr. Rochester in "Jane Eyre" and Mr. Darcy in "Pride and Prejudice."
Beginning Thursday, he will bring to the stage another superstar of 19th-century literature, when he appears as Sherlock Holmes in Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre's production of "The Mask of Moriarty" in the Charity Randall Theatre in Oakland.

I've long been a fan of Sherlock Holmes, and while they do compare this play to Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, and the more recent Robert Downey Jr. versions, they're missing the obvious comparison to Michael Caine playing opposite Ben Kingsley's Dr. Watson in "Without a Clue", a spoof that made Watson the actual detective and Holmes an actor that Watson hired to bring the character from his books to life. I have yet to see the play but if my schedule permits I intend to do so. Now all I have to do is find a night I'm not in Purnell between now and when the show closes.
