Live Design: "San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse (LJP) thinks of itself as a research and development lab for new American plays headed for Broadway. Shows have to be big, high-tech, fast-moving, and done in the theatre's 500-seat house, most of the time on a not-for-profit budget. “It's a trick for us to do the work we do here and serve the project's future,” says Peter J. Davis, the theatre's production manager."
