Stagehands sour on union

Las Vegas Sun: "Worse, the union, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 720, is doing little on their behalf, workers say. They feel abandoned. Some members are so frustrated they are talking about decertifying."

Its unfortunate that these members do not feel the support from their union. It is ridiculous, however not surprising that Boyd would try and get the bare minimum out of their workers, but it should be the responsibility of the union to take care of their members. I realize that there is only so much either party can do before it is in the hands and time frame for the judicial system, but I think there is still plenty of fault on both sides. People need to stop passing around this issue and deal with it up front.

I think it is a shame that these stagehands have been abandoned and clearly both the casinos and the union are at fault here. Unfortunately stagehands are a minority in the workforce and are often taken for granted. It seems that the amount of work had been the problem lately, after the Broadway shutdown last fall. When employers cut hours the workers take a hit because there is just not all that much good work. You cannot blame the employers for trying to keep costs to a minimum, but it seems like they just want to start a fight, which unfortunately is not being dished back at them.

This kind of thing is the reason that the union was set up in the first place. IATSE needs to stop and listen to it's members and help them out. Otherwise the members should just look for private contracts. Ridiculous.

read this article 3 times and i still feel like there's missing information. isn't the point of a union to have pre-negotiated contracts? why then are the stagehands negotiating a contract for the first time? was the casino not a union shop previously?
