A need for some direction at the ART

The Boston Globe: "Let me start by stating my bias plainly. I really want to love the American Repertory Theatre, and sometimes I do. But too often I walk out of an ART performance feeling frustrated, disappointed, and puzzled by something that feels as if it just should have been better than it was."

Having never been to the American Repertory Theatre, most of my knowledge on the subject is based on the article. but I would agree with the statement that wierd, and strange, are only good if they bring something interesting or new. Wierd for the sake of being weird accomplishes very little for the production as a whole except for being really weird. With a little direction it seems the art is in a good place to truly become an innovative and cutting edge theatre.

We just did a project in Production Management, where we looked at examples of their production calendar. I remember when first looking at it, I was a bit confused, for its was slightly hard to read, but had a whole bunch of things that I had never heard of on it. I think they should take this kind of exposure and turn it around to market a new season that could really bring them to the spot they want to be. Make the most of the situation

This is a critic that i can truly appreciate, it may have been his intent to boost his own reputation, but regardless he seems to be a very involved individual in theatre and it's process. Rather then appearing as someone who is simply concerned with the final product of a production, he takes into account all of the process and energy that goes into a show. his critiques in the end come off as a much more sophisticated commentary on the art, and not just on whether he was entertained.
