Six Tips on How to be Ultra Productive

lifehack.org: "The guys at SalaryScout did a quick piece on helping procrastinator with perfectionism. You may have encountered when you want to find the perfect moment to start your project, or you may have tendency to start a task because you have not gotten the best tool you need. Are there any ways to complete task at hand with a tendency towards perfection?"

it seems like the step "prepare your environment for productivity" opens up a gigantic opportunity for procrastinating. people who procrastinate on projects are often easily side tracked from whatever their immediate goal is. starting a cleanup can lead to an overhaul of cleaning - as i have found many times. there's a slippery slope from cleaning your desk to cleaning your room to cleaning your home. i find the best way to get work done is (if possible) leaving my home/school and going to a place like a library or the quiet study in PCA the best way to be distraction free. (even just cleaning up the desktop on a computer can open many doors to distraction.) - maddie regan

I procrastinate. My husband takes procrastination to a whole new level. In our house, we spend a LOT of time trying to "prepare the environment" and most of the other tips here. What I find works with my husband is to just say - just st down and do it. Period.

We all have to shovel sometimes. I acree with mcausland - just get the big stuff out of the way first - then the rest seems easy.

Now if it were only that simple to just follow these six steps. Unfortunately with crew assignments and other things going on in all of our lives, we must multi task no matter what. It's good to have a strategy to get everything doen, nut there are going to be things that stand in the way of the progress that we cannot expect.

Those are really good suggestions. Unfortunately, we do not live in an ideal world. It is often impossible to work on one task at a time. We cannot always control our environment the way we want. It seems that I don't set me goals or timetables, and work is done simply in the order it is due. What should we do to be ultra productive?

going back to what rebecca said, i agree completely. its like when your setting up a department calendar (yes im a huge dork) and you stack the larger projects toward the front of the timeline so that if something can't be done immediately because of lack of materials/space or something, a smaller project can be bumped up to the current project until the large project can be resumed. always good to find problems in large tasks before its too late. -- Maddie regan

So i agree with most of you that you just gotta do the work, regardless. But my comment is that this website, lifehack.org simply provides us with incredibly obvious lists. I don't know how many times I have commented on posts from this site, but almost everytime someone mentions how obvious the "tips" were.

first and foremost i must agree with derek, and thank "lifehack" for sending us another painfully obvious list. That said, I do agree with them. However knowing what you should do and actually doing it are two different things. As maddie said, simply 'preparing the environment' can turn out to be much more than you bargained for when it slowly escalates from a a coffee table to the living room to the entire first floor. Also, working on one thing at a time, while it may feel most fulfilling to to finish one thing after another is not always the bnest option, and i maintain that as long as you are working on something--anything--then you are on the right track.

in terms of preparing my environment for productivity, I find it is easier to just move to someplace that is already prepared for me (like the library). I don't have to clean anything, I can just show up and work.
and in terms of being "ultra productive" i'm not really interested. I can only hope for being "slightly productive" or maybe even "productive". When you run at 110% all day, even 100% is alot to ask for the night as well.
