Technical Director/Scene Shop Foreman

The Technical Director/Scene Shop Foreman at American Conservatory Theater will be responsible for the realization of the set designs and the coordination of all technical elements for Geary Theater productions and for other ACT productions as assigned. The TD/Shop Foreman will be responsible for the safe and efficient operations of the ACT Scene Shop.

The Technical Director/Shop Foreman will collaborate with the Production Manager in the development of technical schedules and budgets. The TD/SF will do cost estimates and be responsible for bringing the physical production elements in on budget. The TD/SF will advise the PM in development of season budgets, long range technical planning and capital improvements.

Together with the Production Manager, The Technical Director/Shop Foreman will collaborate with Designers to review preliminary designs for technical and financial feasibility, propose technical solutions for realizing the designs, and maintain proactive collaboration during the production process. The TD/SF will engineer safe, structurally sound and effective scenery.

The Technical Director/Shop Foreman will supervise and/or participate in the technical aspects of load-ins and technical rehearsals and supervise Stage Crews on the installation, operation and maintenance of the physical productions. The TD/SF will attend all production meetings, department head meetings, stage crew meetings and other meetings as required by the Production Manager and will coordinate with other Production Department Heads on technical elements as needed.

The Technical Director/Shop Foreman reports directly to the Production Manager. The TD/SF, with the assistance of the Assistant Shop Foreman will supervise all IA carpenters and overhire engaged through the Local. The TD/SF is a seasonal position and the terms and conditions of his or her employment are covered under ACT’s collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 16. Projected dates for the 2006-2007 season are July 24, 2006 through June 24, 2007.

Position requirements include five years professional experience in regional theater with a demonstrated successful track record in technical direction and shop management. Extensive knowledge of theatrical construction methods, materials and practices, and experience with wood, metals, plastics, fabrics use in the theatrical use required. Knowledge of theatrical rigging, automation, hydraulics and other systems often employed. A Degree in technical theater, design and/or production is strongly desired. Other qualifications needed are the Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, the Ability to direct and manage several projects of equal priority at once and sustain productivity under pressure. Candidates must have the Ability to establish working relationships and interact in a persuasive and professional manner with a wide variety of people. Good negotiating skills are a must. Candidate should be deft with AutoCad, Vectorworks, PhotoShop, MS Office programs, and Acrobat. A clean DMV record and current Drivers license required.
